“The Use of Force” By William Carlos Williams


The “The Use of force” is short story begins with the appearance of the doctor whose evidently an outsider, invited only because of the ill daughter. Individual affairs are of principal interest in Williams’ story since the dispute appear between the doctor and his  patient, one that is settle only through the use of vigor. The affairs connecting the doctor and the parents are similarly exciting since their apparent manners distinct with their concern about each other. Other aspect of the story of interest would contain the writer’s use of the first-person point of view, especially the narrators thoughts are made known to the readers.
            The reader needs to have a close reading of the text since the dialogues of the characters were not written in parenthesis so it has to be read rigorously for it to be understood.
            William is branded to be a writer who hunted to rekindle the words through the unsullied, rare idiom that swell out of America’s cultural and social heterogeneity. He tried to invent an entirely fresh and uniquely American form of poetry whose subject matter was centered on everyday circumstances of life and the lives of common people.
            Formalism is a theory which emphasizes on the form of literary work to resolve its literary gist. Formalist picture the suitable matter of literary criticism is with the piece itself rather than with literary account, etc.  The formalist believes that the central meaning of the literary work is revealed through a thorough investigation of the piece formal elements rather than going beyond the piece to reflect on other subjects.
