“United Fruit Company” By Pablo Nerudo

The United Fruit Company was an American Corporation that traded tropical fruits grown in the third world Latin American countries and sold in the United States and Europe. As you go through the lines of the poem you will sense that there’s a political and economical struggle. The literary theory that best suit to this poem is Marxism since it tackles about the clash of inferior (lower class) toward the superior (upper class)

            The structures of the poem are: (1) it doesn’t follow specific measures in terms of number of syllables; (2) there’s no rhyme scheme; (3) free verse. It doesn’t follow certain pattern such as aa aa or ab ab. In addition, the author uses different typical cipher in the poem such as Coca-cola Anaconda(mining com), Ford motors, which are all symbol of American industry and powerful corporation; and another one is flies – which represents something infuriating. He also uses metaphors and similes. Another one is imagery and symbols like for example repetition. On the case of the word flies, it is repeated 11 times in 10 lines. The repetition of the word gives the readers an idea of the repetition of the workers of the company. Furthermore, the repetition of flies lead to the visualizing something dead, which is presented later in the poem. The tone of the poem is Ironic and cynical, while its theme is political manifesto.

“The Use of Force” By William Carlos Williams

The “The Use of force” is short story begins with the appearance of the doctor whose evidently an outsider, invited only because of the ill daughter. Individual affairs are of principal interest in Williams’ story since the dispute appear between the doctor and his  patient, one that is settle only through the use of vigor. The affairs connecting the doctor and the parents are similarly exciting since their apparent manners distinct with their concern about each other. Other aspect of the story of interest would contain the writer’s use of the first-person point of view, especially the narrators thoughts are made known to the readers.

            The reader needs to have a close reading of the text since the dialogues of the characters were not written in parenthesis so it has to be read rigorously for it to be understood.

            William is branded to be a writer who hunted to rekindle the words through the unsullied, rare idiom that swell out of America’s cultural and social heterogeneity. He tried to invent an entirely fresh and uniquely American form of poetry whose subject matter was centered on everyday circumstances of life and the lives of common people.

            Formalism is a theory which emphasizes on the form of literary work to resolve its literary gist. Formalist picture the suitable matter of literary criticism is with the piece itself rather than with literary account, etc.  The formalist believes that the central meaning of the literary work is revealed through a thorough investigation of the piece formal elements rather than going beyond the piece to reflect on other subjects.

“Richard Cory” By Edwin Robinson

The author experienced series of intricacies in his early years. These scenarios lead him to create literary pieces which show pessimism. Among his heartbreaking experiences were: (1) the death of his brother due to drug overdose; (2) this loss was followed by another sibling to whom his poem “Richard Cory” thought to refer to; (3) after a year in Harvard, his father also departed this life; (4) he was rejected twice by the woman he loved; (5) when he was about to present his self-published first book to his mother, the latter died days before the copies arrived. Those were some of the tear-jerking experiences he undergone.

            The poem is quatrain in form since it has four lines per stanza, and the first and third lines rhyme each other. Each line consists of ten syllables, following the pattern of abab. “Richard Cory” illustrates a person who is affluent, erudite, well-mannered and well-liked by everyone. Notwithstanding by these character-traits he take his own life.

            For the reader to further understand the poem “Richard Cory” one must use the Psychoanalysis theory because it deals with understanding one’s behavior. It observes investigating the function of unconscious psychological drives and desires in molding human behavior or artistic behavior. Through this, we would understand what Robinson wanted to convey to the reader, and that is to ‘not to judge people by his appearance; rather scrutinize what is on the façade’. The scheme that wealth cannot buy happiness is also recommended. The speakers in the poem are the populace in town who appreciates Richard Cory. He was the richest in town, whose fortunes didn’t make him happy, instead, makes him be jealous of towns’ natives. He was very successful in the eyes of towns’ people but despite of all the achievements he had he executes suicide.

“Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa” By Alvin Yapan and Alemberg Ang

The indie Film is the best example of Feminism Theory because the film defines, establish rights of woman so as portrays gender equality and power of woman. The film is a juncture and variance between feminist and gay concerns. The main character, Karen, is a female teacher who teaches literature and at the same times a dance choreographer.

            The film has a number of Filipino poems and songs. It is one of the characteristics of the film that makes the viewer pleased of, because it makes them reminisce their lesson in Philippine Literature. The music chosen for the poem are really great, and deserves a round of applause. The poems used are known to be written by popular female writers. The story is simple yet became satisfying through the combination of poem, song, and dance. The characters displayed a remarkable dramatic portrayal. Though they have limited dialogues, their eyes and gestures speaks a lot to convey ideas. They successfully conveyed the message to the viewers, and the latter not only just a simple viewer but a viewer who would also encourage thinking. The film didn’t under estimate the capacity of the viewers to understand. It never shows offensive acts despite its sensuality. The characters appeared to be an intellectual individual despite the role that they had. They think things wisely the same way how a person would do, overcoming an obstacles by dancing according to the beat of the music, and correct what is wrong. The film raised the dignity of a teacher, poet, artists, and dancers.

“Team Building 2012”

The Third Annual Team Building of Mentors Society was held at Postema Resort in Kawit, cavite last Feb 10, 2012.  By using the principle of aestheticism theory one would perfectly appreciate and enjoy the view of nature. As you enter the resort, you would feel and see the beauty of nature. Trees are ubiquitously arranged. Flowers are smiling as if welcoming us with open arms. The place is complete with facilities a simple Filipino would love to appreciate. There’s a wild field to accommodate the game our group had prepared. A playground of small children is also encouraging place to be with. You could also stay in the place overnight because it has rooms available and the resort were really ready to be of service of large number of visitors. Also the three out of five swimming pools were reserve just for our team.

Upon hearing the words of encouragement of Maam celeste, folders were given to each group

containing the series of games to be played. The games’ descriptions were written in a short bond paper and should be analyzed in order to be performed. In doing this, we had to apply New Criticism Theory since it encourages the readers to discover the meaning of a work through a detailed analysis of the text itself. It requires close reading for the test to be understood. Examples of the description were: “A game that would stir thinking and imagination. Collaboration of ideas is very much need and it has no room of failure. An excellent theory may take place from it. Try and try until you succeed in risky?

            As I’ve read the description we would have rely only to the text, far different from literary pieces which we had to dig the background of the author for us to further understand the text. Here, we need to examine the text, analyze it for us to guess the game.
